Canadian police won’t investigate doctor for sterilizing Indigenous woman

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 02:46:59 GMT

The Canadian government says it is urgently trying to end the forced sterilization of Indigenous women, describing the practice as a human rights violation and a prosecutable offense. Yet police say they will not pursue a criminal investigation into a recent case in which a doctor apologized for his “unprofessional conduct” in sterilizing an Inuit woman. In July, The Associated Press reported on the case of an Inuit woman in Yellowknife who had surgery in 2019 aimed at relieving her abdominal pain. The obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Andrew Kotaska, did not have the woman’s consent to sterilize her, and he did so over the objections of other medical personnel in the operating room. She is now suing him.“This is a pivotal case for Canada because it shows that forced sterilization is still happening,” said Dr. Unjali Malhotra, of the First Nations Health Authority in British Columbia. “It’s time that it be treated as a crime.”Kotaska declined to comment to the AP. Last month, he release...

World Rugby defends bunker reviews at Rugby World Cup and says injured Dupont can wear a mask

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 02:46:59 GMT

PARIS (AP) — World Rugby CEO Alan Gilpin defended the bunker review system at the Rugby World Cup after a red card was not issued for Tonga winger Afusipa Taumoepeau’s hit on Scotland captain Jamie Ritchie last weekend.Taumoepeau was given a yellow card for the first half incident last Sunday, but it wasn’t upgraded to red apparently because of Ritchie’s slight duck into the tackle. The captain subsequently failed a head injury assessment, which means a mandatory 12-day rest. Many observers thought the upright hit merited a clear red card and the bunker review — where officials have eight minutes to change their initial decision — should clearly have seen that. But Gilpin said mitigation, such as the height of the tackle, comes into it and defended the system.“The foul play review officer in the bunker is obviously seeing more angles than television viewers at home or people in the stadium are seeing, and we think there is great consistency there and the bunker is working...

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish and U.S. officials signed an agreement Wednesday in Warsaw for the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant, part of an effort by the Central European nation to move away from polluting fossil fuels.Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called the deal to build the plant at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in the Pomerania region near the Baltic Sea the beginning of a new chapter for Poland, and described nuclear energy as a stable and clean energy source.Last year, Morawiecki’s government announced that it had chosen the U.S. as its partner for the project, which will be based in the Pomerania province near the Baltic Sea coast. A consortium made up of Westinghouse and Bechtel signed the agreement with the Polish state-owned company overseeing the nuclear program, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ).Poland is planning to spend $40 billion to build two nuclear power plants with three reactors each, the last one to be launched in 2043.
